H.C.Burgess

Harry Burgess was my great uncle and I came across your article about him during a web search. I would be very pleased to have any more information about him as it is relevant to my search for my great grandfather. I also have some information about him and the occasional letter to my late mother. If anyone has any information, I would be most grateful especially if Jenny Bindon (who appears to be my second cousin) would be prepared to chat to me.

Anstice Terrace
published by on Fri, 13/01/2017 - 21:43

My Grandmother's - (Florence Mary Mayne) birth certificate led my research to 9 Anstice Terrace, Weston Supermare. She was born 15.07.1910 to Florence (formerly Jones) and Ernest Mayne (marine Engineer). By the census of April 1911 Florence Mary had been adopted by Gilbert & Gertrude Shorney (4 Walliscote Grove Road). I have checked parish records in the area that are online and other census documents and the birth parents seem to have dispeared, I can find no evidence so far of a marriage either in the indexes. I found a newspaper clip advertising rooms on Anstice Terrace so think they may have rented, had the baby then left. Number 9 Anstice Terrace does not feature in the 1911 census and seems to have become Alexnader Parade. If anyone has any links to the Shorneys, the Maynes,Anstice Terrace or has any ideas it would be appreciated. My great grandparents seem to have disappeared!

MontpelierTerrace
published by Paul Tregelles on Thu, 12/01/2017 - 16:20

At the time of the 1871 Census Edgar Marriage Brown & Agnes Brown were living at 2 Montpelier Terrace. Can anyone let me know whether Montpelier Terrace is now the row of 5 terraced properities in Montpelier next to The Parish Church ?

Also, if this is the case is anyone aware which one would have been No 2 in 1871.

Thanks

The Bombing of Weston-super-Mare
published by on Mon, 09/01/2017 - 14:07
My mother recalls an annual event on January 4th / 5th 1941 when the house she was living in was damaged by a bomb nearby. The house opposite in Lonsdale avenue received a direct hit. My mother and my grandparents had spent the whole of Christmas with this family (Andrews) and they were all killed that night. My mother has vivid recollections of that event and a further event where her house in Argyll avenue was also bombed in June 1942 and the family was machine gunned by a bomber perhaps mistaking them for a gun crew.

As my mother (Doreen Lillian Pain nee Salway) is now 92 and lives in Lancashire, her memories are clear for the moment and I wonder if anyone would like me to write her thoughts down whilst she can still remember them. My mother worked in Weston Library throughout the war and later moved to Bristol following her marriage to an airman (my father) from RAF Locking. Look forward to any reply.

Brown's Cafe
published by Paul Tregelles on Sun, 08/01/2017 - 10:50

Does anyone know the date Brown's cafe was opened  and the address, as the current building is located at 76-78 High Street, but a photo I have of the cafe in the 1930's appears to indicate it was at number 25?
