John Curry & Ann Caple/Capel
published by on Mon, 03/04/2017 - 10:49

In the 1851 census my 4x gt grandfather John Curry is living next door to his daughter Mary Ann Jones (nee Curry), he is 80 and it says born Lacking, I presume it should be Locking. I have researched this parish and surrounding ones for a baptism around the years 1770/1771 but nothing so far. I have found Mary Ann Curry baptism in Blagdon on 4 Sep 1808 to a John and Ann Curry, also found a marriage of John Curry and Ann Capel in Christon 27 May 1799.

Does anyone out there in the wonderful wsmfhs world have any further information or guidance of where to look next for bap of John Curry and Ann Capel. Many thanks, Avis

Could someone please be kind enough to find the burial date of my great grandfather John Gardiner.  I know he died 2nd September 1905 and was buried in the cemetery at Weston Super Mare.  He was 53 years of age.

He had retired from the prison service and was living at Myrtledale, WSM with his wife and daughter (my grandma).

Thank you

Jones & Taylor on Flat Holm Island
published by on Sun, 02/04/2017 - 11:34

Henry Jones b1766 Uphill along with his wife Sarah Taylor b1769 Yatton were on Flat Holm Island from about 1804 to 1823 managing the lighthouse and farming (until Trinity House took over the ownership in 1823). Likewise Sarah's parents James Taylor and his wife Betty Blackford b1837 Butcombe were lighthouse keepers & farmers on the island from apx 1783 to 1795. James the keeper from about 1783 until his death on the island in 1789, then his wife took over until her death on the island in 1795, they are both buried in Yatton, where they also married, they lived in the Hamlet of Hewish near Yatton before moving to the island.

Hoping anyone has any further information, especially about James Taylor, all I have about James who is my 5x gt grandfather is that he married Betty Blackford in Yatton on 26 March 1765.

The other question is about the Jones line, Henry Jones (married to Sarah Taylor) was b1766 in Uphill to Henry Jones and Newity Lane, they married in Uphill in 1765, I have found Newity's parents again in Uphill, but where Henry came from is a mystery, can anyone help?

I have added a tree to these names under the Member Surname Interests.

Many thanks, and regards, Avis

Frank Kitley Burges
published by on Thu, 30/03/2017 - 10:25

Frank Burges also known as Frank Kitley Burges and Frank Kitley. Born 22.2.1853. His mother was

unmarried but later married Matthew Henry Harse Kitley. He is shown on 1861 census living with parents and siblings in Ashley Place WSM. In 1871 he is lodging in Bath a Lower Borough Walls.

He marries in 1880 on 26th April to Sarah Elver. He is shown on 1881 census staying with his

aunt and grandmother in Lower Langford and unmarried? She is living in WSM at 60 Palmer

Street with their son Frank Kitley Burges (Jnr) and his sister Emily. WHY does he say he is

unmarried. they went on to have second child in May 1886 and six weeks later he dies in WSM.

I have a photograph of him in uniform with a pillbox hat so must been taken around 1875? but

also found a deserter of that name from Grenadier Guards. Was this why he said he was unmarried

and was not living with his family. ? Also dont know where he was buried. He is my husbands

great grandfather. Any suggestions would be wonderful.
