Edith Bessie White daughter of Charles Ernest White and John Summers
published by on Sun, 29/07/2012 - 5:02

Approximately 1911 my grandmother, Edith Bessie White's (daughter of Charles Ernest White), mother passed away and her father sent her from London area to live with an aunt (? Cahill) in Taunton or Norwood.

Also, my great great grandfather John Summers who married Margaret Jackson (I think they had 2 children, John and Mabel) and my great grandfather John Summers and Mary Collings.

If anyone has any information on these families, I would appreciate it.

Thank you,

Debra Summers

You do not give an date of birth for Edith Bessie WHITE but is she the Edith WHITE who born in Chelsea in 1898 and appears on the 1911 census living with a Henry CAHILL in Norwood London, described as his niece?

Regarding John SUMMERS and Margaret JACKSON - can you give some approximate dates of birth for these?

Thank you Pat.

Edith B. White's birthdate is 1898 approx. and yes, I believe that is her and thank you very much, I had just found the 1911 census.

The town of Taunton is mentioned in some family papers also, as a place that Edith lived but I have no info. on that.

John Summers was born May 26, 1857 in Wigtown, Scotland and died in Weston-Super Mare.  He married Mary Collings about 1862.  John had a sister Mabel. He was a county court clerk (if you have any info. about that).

John's parents were Thomas Summers and Margaret Jackson and were married in Wigtown, Scotland but I have no other info. on them yet.

If anyone has info. on how daily life may have looked in the 1800s in your area, I would appreciate it.

There is quite a bit on this site which can help you sort out your family.  John SUMMERS married Mary COLLINGS 26th March 1881 at Emmanuel Church, Weston-super-Mare (not in 1862 you suggested) and the full details can be seen under Research Aids & Transcripts.

Their 5 children were all christened at Emmanuel - see the transcriptions for more details.

Sadly, he died exactly 10 years after his marriage on 26th March 1891 in Weston and is buried in Weston Cemetery.  The memorial on his grave also includes 2 of his sons, Thomas & John, and his sister Agnes Mabel SUMMERS who died in Weston-super-Mare in 1918 (who from censuses I see was born in Ireland).  His widow remarried in 1887 and is not buried in Weston.

You mentioned he was described as a County Court Clerk when he died. When he married he gave his occupation as Solicitor's Clerk which ties in nicely.
