Mystery of Sarah Cardingbrook
published by Brian & Pam Airey on Tue, 31/01/2023 - 16:18

Winscombe Parish records show marriage on 21 March 1723 of John HANNAM yeoman  to Sarah CARDINGBROOK. She was 27yrs old and a spinster.

A John HANNAM jnr was buried 26 December 1728.

Abraham THAYER of Loxton married Sarah HANNAM of Winscombe widow in Bedminster St John's on 5 March 1728. (9 months before possible death of 1st husband). There were 3 children of this marriage all baptised in Kewstoke.

I can't find any baptism of a Sarah CARDINGBROOK or variants anywhere, although there was a family in Winscombe of that name at the same time.

Any thoughts?

Brian

These dates are before the Julian Calendar was introduced in 1752 therefore the marriage of Abraham THAYER to the widow, Sarah HANNAM should be written as 5th March 1728/9 as the new year started on March 25th.   Image from Ancestry.

Thanks Pat. That would explain a marriage AFTER possible death of John.

I am wondering if Abraham died at Kewstoke in May 1744/1745 and is buried with his first wife Elisabeth/Elizabeth? Abraham's possible burial record is on FreeReg and his surname is transcribed as THAIER (and THAEIR on Findmypast). Elisabeth was buried at Kewstoke on 19 June 1728/1729 (before Abraham's second marriage 5 March 1728/1729). I then thought there might be a third marriage record for Sarah but I think she was buried at Bedminster St John's (FamilySearch link so requires registration) on 26 January 1755/1756.

None of this helps you with her baptism record!

I am happy that Abraham and Elizabeth died in Kewstoke etc but can't find the marriage of these two. I will have a look at the above death of Sarah. Thanks for your input

I think you will find that the double date is only used for Jan, Feb or March before 1752.  Therefore Abraham was buried in May 1744, Elizabeth was buried in June 1728.Abraham's marriage was in March 1728/9.

The original record states that Jos/John Hannam & Sara Cardingbrook married 23 Mar 1723 - but at the end of the entry is says at (or "of") then very faintly something that looks like "Churchill".

Looking further up the original page is recorded a marriage (poss 3 Feb 1723) for Anthony Lewis and Mary Cardingbrook (and I'm sure it says this!) of Churchill.

The Marriage License for Anthony Lewis and Mary Cardingbrook (on ancestry) is very hard to read and is beyond me - but you can make out Anthony Lewis and Mary Cardingbrook of Winscombe (no mention of Churchill however!)

Looking at the entry for the marriage license for John & Sarah in "Marriage Allegation Bonds of the Bishop of Bath & Wells (up to 1755)" (which you can download for free from archive.org) it states that Sarah was a spinster of 27.

If these two (Sarah & Mary) were related and did hail from Churchill - then checking the original records for Churchill do not help as according to Ancestry some of the years around 1696 are missing.

This would explain why you cannot find a birth entry however! Would there be any Bishops Transcripts for Churchill?
