I have come across the below and wondered why did they marry twice. If Minnie wanted to prove marriage to he parents why not show certificate?!

1) St Peter & St Paul Aston Birmingham parish records page 158 entry 315 shows marriage after banns on 2 March 1889 of

John Robert Godfrey Worthington, 25yrs, bachelor, clerk, of 146 Witton Road, father Robert Noblett Worthington Tutor  to

Minnie Berry, 25yrs, spinster of 146 Witton Road father Charles Berry, gentleman

Both signed in the presence of John Fisher & Agnes Godfray Worthington

2) Parish church of Eccles page 20 entry 40 shows marriage after banns on 30 July 1890 of

John Robert Worthington, 26yrs, bachelor, clerk in holy orders of Handsworth father Robert Noblett Worthington, Gentleman  to

Minnie Berry, 26yrs, spinster, of Eccles father Charles Berry, gentleman.

Both signed in the presence of Charles & Martha Berry

Interesting problem.  Could there have been a problem with the calling of the Banns for the first marriage which might have invalidated that marriage?

I have come across a similar double wedding but in that case the bride was under age and did not have permission from her parents the first time.
