COLES family from Publow, Pensford and Stanton Drew
published by Pat Hase on Mon, 06/06/2022 - 17:32

Not within the stated area of this society but I'm getting very confused with this family and need help!

When my 4 x great grandmother died in 1829 this newspaper entry gave me some information which has intrigued me.  It stated that she was the mother of a Mrs PAYNE.

The 1841 census of the Carriage Inn at Monkton Combe shows a John PAYNE as Publican and Eliza PAYNE as his wife.

I found a marriage of a John PAYNE to an Eliza COLES in 1823 in St Mary Redcliffe in Bristol witnessed by a James COLES and with John entered as a widower.

An earlier marriage at St James Bath was of John PAYNE and a Catherine COLES in 1814 when the witness was a Frances COLES.

So, was Eliza the daughter of my direct ancestor? - or was it Catherine?  - or could it have been both and he married his "Deceased wife's sister"?

Eliza PAYNE did not die until 1888 and I have just sent for her Will in the hope that she mentions others of the COLES family.  There are 2 COLES girls with her in 1841 and various COLES nieces in later censuses.

Thanks for reading this far and perhaps taking a look at my problem.

My wife is a direct descendant of John Payne the landlord of the Carriage Inn in Monkton Coombe.

The relationships as you say are rather complicated - I will contact you directly later -  since as you say this is outside the scope of the Society's area of interest.
