Sherwood Foresters Regiment
published by on Sat, 24/03/2012 - 16:38

I have recently found that my great uncle, John R Frost, was a Private in the Sherwood Foresters and that he was killed in 1915.

I have found this information from the GRO War Deaths Army Other Ranks (1914-1921) index.  I would like to know where he died. Would this information be held at Kew?  I would be grateful for any ideas.

According to the Commonwealth War Graves Site, Private John R FROST, son of Martin & Fanny FROST of Burton on Trent, Service Number 3613 of the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) died 11th Aug 1915 and was buried at the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Belgium - Grave Ref III.D.16A.  There is other information on that site about the Cemetery including a plan and a link to Google maps.

His record of service might have more details - some of the WW1 service records are searchable on Ancestry and Findmypast - but not all have survived so you might not be lucky.

Thank you so much Pat for looking into this for me.  It is very useful but sadly in a negative way as I have found it is not my John R Frost.  My John was the son of John and Hannah Frost.  Another path with a dead end.  Back to the records again!
