Lancelot Rogers from Backwell

Hello Forum,

I am trying to trace the ancestry and of a Thomas Rogers from Backwell born circa 1837, father Lancelot. I have found a Lancelot Rogers on the 1841 Census in Backwell whose age is shown as 56 years and from Somerset. The next occurrence I am able to find is of a Lancelot Rogers who died at the Bedminster Union Workhouse in 1863 and was buried at St Andrews Church, Backwell, on 23 March 1863 age 86yrs. (WSMFHS transcript) which would give his birth circa 1777 and not 1785 as calculated from the 1841 Census. I cannot find Lancelot in the 1851 & 1861 Census returns. Baptism Transcripts show the baptisms of 4 children - Mary, Martha, John & James - to a Lancelot & Ann Rogers at Backwell. I am completely confused as I also have from the transcripts my Thomas Rogers marrying Louisa Lock at St Andrews, Backwell on 4 April 1858 whose father is a Lancelot Rogers. Thomas Rogers was born in Backwell according to the 1861 census but is some 16 years older than Lancelot & Ann's youngest child. Is it just a coincidence that my Thomas Rogers from Backwell has a father called Lancelot Rogers too and the family I have found from the transcripts is not the same as my Thomas Rogers? Just when you get a good name to trace they seem to disappear!

There is a Launcelot Rogers living in Chelvey in 1841, aged 30. Wife Mary Ann. Children Thomas 4, Elizabeth 2, Sarah 1.

In 1861 Lancelot (aged 48) and Mary Ann (49) are living in Blackwell with 6 children (not including Thomas).

In 1881 they are in Yatton with a son and 2 grandchildren. He is 68 and a farmer of 4 acres. Living with them is a sister Martha, 65.

A Lancelot Rogers married Mary Adams in Bristol on 1 February 1835. Might be your man.

There is an L Rogers aged 78, a Rope Maker in Bedminster Union Workhouse at Long Ashton in 1861. He gives his place of birth as Backwell. Could this be your Lancelot?

In 1851 there is a Lancelott ROJERS aged 69, a Rope Maker living in Backwell; West Town. Also with him are his widowed sister Elizabeth HYDE (75) and daughter Mary ROJERS (36) all born Backwell.

I think David has the correct Lancelot for Thomas' father but the age difference could easily make the two Lancelots father and son or uncle and nephew perhaps?

I agree with the 1851 census given in a reply although I think it says Rogers - Ancestry.

Also there is 1841 in Backwell West town.

Lancelott Rogers (Ancestry has this transcribed as Lamelott), 56, ag lab

Ann, 54, Mary 27, Ann, 30

Be prepared for age discrepancies. I had one years ago where he was down as 75 (clearly, from the transcript) and when I had everything else about this person sorted, he was only fifty something. Census collectors of the time clearly made mistakes also.

As Janet says Ancestry have transcribed the 1851 entry as Rogers but I found it on Find My Past where it is transcribed as the image appears to read as "Rojers". Sorry, I should have said where I found it.

Hello Dave & other contributors,

Mystery Solved (I think)

Two Lancelot Rogers both marrying a Mary Ann but a difference in ages of about some 22 years. Lancelot the Ropemaker appears as an Ag. labourer on the 1841 Census but I have not found a connection to him yet.

My Lancelot was born circa 1811 in Blackwell, an Agricultural Labourer, and married a Mary Ann (Unknown) and had 3 children Thomas (1837), Elizabeth (1839) & Sarah (1840).

Thomas is in my branch and married Louisa Lock in Backwell on 4th April 1858. They had two daughters Adelaide Louisa (1859) & Mary Ann (1860). Mary Ann moved to Penarth, S.Wales where she married into my branch on 22nd. May 1879. If any of this relates to you kind people I will be pleased to correspond further.

I have more information about the family. My connection is William Rogers, son of Lance/Lancelotte Rogers and Mary Ann Adams. The grandchildren living with them in 1871 (Anne) and 1881 (Anne/William) are children from Williams's first marriage. I do have Thomas as one of Lance and Mary Ann's children.

Hello Diane,

It would be nice to be able to connect with your branch of Lancelot Rogers. I have been unable to trace a link to both people in the transcripts so I suppose, unless serendipity occurrs, that I will never know who my Lancelot's (1811-1885) ancestors were. At least, with everyone's help and understanding, I have been able to unravel my problem and trace the family to the present day.

Hello all Lancelot Roger 'searchers'!

I have 2 Lancelote Rogers in my tree. - Father and son

I am decsended from Lancelote Rogers and Mary Ann Adams' daughter Hannah (or Anna) (b.1856 Backwell) who married George Kitchen

I have Lancelot b.1811 backwell and the son of Lancelot Rogers b.1783 Backwell and mother Ann Derham.

Does this tally with any other trees?

I've been following this thread with interest but have no connection with the family.

The Baptism Registers from Backwell which are on our site do have these entries:

Baptised 6-Jun1773 Lancelot ROGERS son of Thomas & Jemima

I realise that this date doesnâ€™t fit with the 1783 you mentioned â€“ do you have a later baptism?

Born 10 Mar 1811 Baptised 05-May 1811 Launcelot ROGERS son Launcelot & Ann

If you look at other baptisms on this site you can find the name DERHAM used as a 2nd name for another son of Launcelot & Ann.

On the CD of marriages in Bristol which are available from the Bristol & Avon FHS you can find a marriage of a Launcelot ROGERS with Ann DERHAM in St James Church, Bristol on the 17th Dec 1804.

This seems to support your findings but I haven't seen the original entry for this marriage - there might be some additional information in the register.

Also following this thread with interest although I don't think my ROGERS family are connected.
On FreeReg there is the baptism at Backwell 18 Apr 1783 of Lancelott son of Thomas and Jemima Rogers. Perhaps this is the one referred to?

Also am not related at all but somehow found this one interesting!

You now seem to have 2 possible baptisms! Is it possible that the first Lancelot died and then they used the name again, 10 years after the first birth? I have several cases of this reuse of Christian names in my tree - sounds unlucky to us but as it often happened, it may have been in memory of the first child.

Just looked at burials - Lancelot Rogers buroied at Backwell 26.7.1774! No other info unfortunately.

Further scrutiny show that Lancelot (christened 18.4.1783) was the next son born to Thomas and Jemima after the first Lancelot was buried (assuming it was him) ie they had 2 Lancelots in a row.

Also, looking at their other children, Betty was the first at Backwell, christened 7.9.1770, then there was a Betty Rogers buried 22.6.1775 and then they had another girl, also christened Betty 9.7.1775.

Perhaps this other possible reuse of a Christian name supports the theory of Lancelot?

Have you seen this? - from a Google search of Lancelot rogers.

Except when Evans and Nott disturb our rest.
Notes:One of Backwell's church bells has an inscription that may have been referred to in local jokes.
"Bilby and Boosh may come and see
What Evans and Nott have done by me 1758"

Also there is an entry for a Lancelot rogers in a poll book for Backwell, West town on Ancestry which gives him as a lessee of a house and garden.

Hello corresponders,

I agree with all of you regarding the Baptisms, Marriages and Burials for Thomas & Jemima Rogers and his offspring.

We have in the WSM FHS indexes a burial at Cleeve as follows

D/P CVE 2/1/2 37 295 Lancelot Rogers Cleeve 21-Mar 1885 74 J Fletcher

This gentleman is clearly the Lancelot born 1811 in Backwell. In the GRO Death Indexes there is a Lancelot Rogers listed in the Bedminster Registration District, March 1/4 1885 age 74 years. It looks as though we have managed to sort out this family for me to my complete satisfaction. Please accept my apologies if I have not replied directly to any of you wonderful people.

Is it possible for Janet to give us the link for the quote regarding the Bells of St Andrews? I cannot locate the source myself.

By the way, I am sitting in a Cold Narrowboat at Long Buckby in Northamptonshire and sometimes my Internet connection doesn't always work so apolgies once again for any poor responses on my part.

I believe it was put on (in a Canadian journal) by a Diane.

If you are not in Ancestry I will send the direct link but that is a little more complicated.

Not quite sure what you found, Janet, as Ancestry doesn't give me an easy reference, but pretty sure any Canadian query/information about Lancelot Rogers and family would have been from me. Some years ago I had a query published in a Weston Super Mare newspaper too. (No family members replied.)
