Help with Yeates/Marshall please.
published by on Sun, 25/10/2015 - 1:43

I may have asked a variation of this question before but several seem to have disappeared since the restart. So....

I have a marriage 16/06/1751 of Moses YEATES & Jane MARSHALL in Bedminster Somerset.

Moses YEATES was buried in Bedminster (Bedminster Down) 17/01/1788 aged 57 making his birth c1731. Where did he and his family come from before 1751?  After that date those relevant to me are in Bedminster, Dundry, Barrow Gurney, Long Ashton, Winford and immediate surrounds. They aren't in those places before 1751. I've also tried Axbridge, Blagdon, Butcombe, Clutton, Chew Magna, Cheddar, Nailsea, Ubley, Wedmore and others.  I've done "Yeates", "Yates" varations and plain "Moses" searches for Somerset on FreeReg and similar. Nothing.

There is someone who has a Moses Yates b.1735 in Cricklade, Wilts, but I haven't found the records for myself.  If I find that record, how plausible that Moses would move from there to Bedminster? I'm presuming ours is a labourer but have nothing to confirm that.

Jane MARSHALL was buried as YEATES in Bedminster (Bedminster Down) 26/03/1780. I haven't found an age recorded at death.

Other family researchers have Jane MARSHALL as bap 01/04/1734 in Nempnett Thrubwell of William & Ann.  I haven't found those parish records but have found the records on FreeReg. I don't find anything that specifically ties this Jane to our Moses. There are several other Jane Marshalls from 1727-1734 who could be the Jane.

Can anyone help with either of these? Any clues would be much appreciated.

You seem to have researched many of the places I would have suggested

I did find this in Somerset Record Office!   - seems to suggest he was a Yeoman Farmer.

Repository Somerset Heritage Centre
Level Piece
Ref No Q/SR/328/4/22
Title Conviction.
Description Moses Yeates of Bedminster, Yeoman, is convicted of cursing 5 profane curses. JP: John Brickdale.
Date 23 Jul 1760

You might try the Overseers' Account Book to see if he is entered there as a tax payer - it might give an address for him.

The burial of Moses YATES [sic] on the 17th Jan 1788, aged 57,  was at St John's Church Bedminster.  The transcription by the Bristol & Avon FHS does not mention Bedminster Down - have you seen the original?  However, when  Jane YEATES was buried at St John's Bedminster it does give the abode as Bedminster Down but there is also mention of a Mr JONES - what does that mean?

There is always the possibility that Moses might have been christened as a child or young adult so have you looked in a wider year range?   (One of my ancestors was christened when he was 65!)

Perhaps some other members have some ideas.

FamilySearch has a baptism record for Moses YEATES in "Chicklade", Wiltshire. The date of birth is recorded as 6 July 1735 and the date of Baptism as 13 July 1735. The father is shown as Moses, but there is no mother's name.

Yes, it's possible that this is your man. I suggest you try to find out what happened to this particular Moses YEATES to see if you can rule him out. Did he marry/die locally? Did he have any siblings? What happened to them? etc etc

The IGI has the following baptisms:

  • Sarah YEATES 1 July 1744 (to Moses and Mary)
  • Isaac YEATES 27 December 1746 (ditto)
  • Ann YEATES 19 August 1750 (ditto)
  • Mary YEATES 28 May 1738 (ditto).

Thank you for looking that up Dave. Now you've confirmed a record exists I'll wander into Wiltshire records and see what I can find using the clues you've given.

If it is our Moses, I wonder why they moved from Chicklade to Bedminster? I'm interested in why people relocate and often get lost in the history behind some of the moves.  I fairily recently discovered our move to Wales wasn't an original idea.  Unbeknownst to the family a great aunt was born about half a mile from our home with her father accountant for the railway at the time a local rail line was set up that ran passed the edge of our wood (now abandoned); a gggrandfather's family (can't recall off hand exactly who it was) briefly resided within 6 miles from here; 1400s one lot lived at the local castle; 200 years before that a different side of the family built the thing! There are many other instances of circular county movements.

Thank you for taking the time to look in to this.

Thank you Pat, that conviction made me laugh.  If it is our Moses, 'twould seem I'm a chip off a very old block!

I haven't seen the originals.  Initially I got my information from B&A FHS but later added "Bedminster Down" to Moses without recording where that came from.  I am curious about the "Mr.Jones".  I thought it was possibly a different curate officiating?  Yet another family black-sheep moment?  I'd like to know. How to find out?

These YEAT(E)S/YATES seem to appear out of the blue in Bedminster with Moses marriage in 1751. In the areas I've searched so far I only find two references in Dundry1628 then nothing until the 1751 Bedminster marriage, hence gradually increasing the search circle to try to find where they came from. They are proving to be a difficult family; parents continuing to produce offspring at the same time as their eldest start to do so and using same names; cousins born in the same year given the same name, producing their own children in the same year with the same names.

Any thoughts on Jane Marshall's origins?
