15 Burlington Street

John Hugh Jakeway lived at 15 Burlington Street and was recorded at that address in the 1881 and 1891 censuses. Today there is no number 15 in Burlington Street, the last house in the terrace is number 13 and known as Clara's Cottage. Immediately next door to Clara's Cottage is the Weston-super-Mare Gaslight Company Workshops which were built about 1908. In the photo attached, the demarcation between number 13 and the Workshops can be clearly seen, not least by the difference in the height of the buildings and the building line used. This would suggest that the Workshops were newly built rather than converted from previous domestic housing, which leads me to question whether the street numbering might have altered between 1891 and 1908 when the Workshops were built. Is it possible that the current number 13 was originally number 15?

Any information relating to the history of Burlington Street would be most welcome.

Many of Weston's Streets were re-numbered in about 1908/9. Where the houses had been numbered consecutively they were renumbered with odds on one side and evens on the other side of the road. I suspect the same applied here. I see that in 1891 and 1901 a George PRIDDLE was living at No 13 and in 1911 he was at No 11(next to what is now Clara's Cottage) - assuming that he didn't move then that does suggest a change of number. It looks as if No 14 might have become No 13. But at the moment I can't quite see what No 15 would have become. By 1917 - No 15 was the number of the Gas Company Workshop and stores.

It might be possible to find out more by consulting the Street Directories for that period.

You are looking at the wrong end 15 is four doors from Alfred Street

That's interesting David, what date was that? Burlington Street itself runs from Alfred Street through to Hopkins Street crossing over Orchard Street and the numbering is quite difficult to sort out.

I have spoken to Brian Austin who, over the years, has researched the number changes for the Weston Roads and he tells me that he thinks originally Burlington Street was numbered consecutively from Alfred Street but included the houses which are now attributed to Poplar Place (which is now between Nos 7 & 9). He believes that Nos 13, 14 and 15 Burlington Street are now 3, 5 & 7 Poplar Place.

He also thinks that George PRIDDLE probably moved which shoots my theory in the foot!

the street directory I have lists a G PRIDDLE living in No 11 next to the Plymouth Bretheren Hall.

I'm not sure of the date as its a copy I made in the Boullevard library but I think it was 1913 When I go to the library on Saturday I will see if I can find John Jakeway Did he do anythig to get his nane in the papers If yes I'll see what I can find in the Local Newspapers
