Cop Lippett, Cheddar, Somerset

In the 1871 Census I have an address as Cop Lippett #11 in Cheddar. Using Google Earth there is no reference to that name. Have looked online extensively to find out if this was an actual street name or a part of Cheddar but have been unsuccessful. Cannot find any reference to this. Would anyone know if this was indeed a street name back in 1871 and perhaps now re-named?

Hello Karen
Having looked at the 1871 census for Cop Lippett, I see that either side of this location are the list of residents in The Lynch, Bradley Cross and The Batch, Draycott.

Using the modern digital map system for Somerset[ ie Know Your Place], link

Locate Lippiatt and Bradley Cross and somewhere between could be Cop Lippett. The new maps show a modern map over a previous Ordnance Survey map.

Thank you for the map link....very interesting! The Census copy I have for 1871 for my relative definitely is printed as Cop Lippett with the house number and subsequent pages for other people. I have looked at Lippiatt Lane through Google Earth but have found only one house with a number, others are hidden, so I'm guessing at which place it is.

Hi Karen,
The place you refer to is The Lippiatt, Cheddar and Lippiatt Lane, Cheddar. This is an area of Cheddar and it appears that the Census Records should read 'TOP LIPPIATT'In 1871 the person making the record just referred to the area ie 'Top Lippiatt' meaning at the top of the Lippiatt as there was probably no house names. You should be able to locate the area quite easily on a map of Cheddar.

My 3 x great grandparents lived in Cop Lippett, Cheddar and that is the address for 1841, 1851, 1861. 1871, 1891 but 1881 it was 6 The Lippetts, 1901 it was Lippiatt and 1911 it was The Lippett. No mention of Top Lippiatt for my family's address. It may have changed as indicated by the later census returns. I wonder why street names are changed. I rather like the charm of Cop Lippett as there must have been a reason why it was called that in the first place.

Agree Les, Cop Lippett has its charm. Have been unsuccessful in trying to find the origin of the name and when/why it was changed. Have gone down Lippiatt Lane but there is no big sign with my ancesters name or house number on it....haha. Thanks for the info.

Thanks Arthur. I gather the name was changed as Cop Lippett is definitely printed on the 1871 Census. Have looked through Google Earth at Lippiatt Lane, but house numbers, except one, are not visible.

A William BARNES is listed on the 1841 census as living at Cop Lippett. If you search the Tithe Map for Cheddar (on The Genealogist) you will see that he and twenty others are living in cottages described as "many small cottages upon Shelving Rock" [Plot 748]. From the map on that site you can see exactly where those cottages were at the start of what is now The Lippiatt. The date of the Tithe Map is 21st October 1837
