John Jaques born Winscombe

John Jaques was baptised at St James the Great on the 24th April 1734 in Winscombe. He does not appear again on the parish records for this village.

A John Jaques, a widower of St George's, married Sarah House, a spinster, by licence on the 5th October 1782 at Portbury, witnesses Humpy Atherton and Joseph Wedmore.

Does anyone with local knowledge think it likely that these are one and the same John Jaques? If so, do you have any suggestions as to how I might prove it?

Hi Julie.

Did the surname JACQUES subsequently morph into JACKWAYS? I ask this because John's parents were Hugh and Ann and a Hugh and Ann JACKWAYS baptised Hugh and Hannah (twins?) in Winscombe on 24 October 1744. And I note that your own surname is JAKEWAY - another variant?

Yes, you're right. The Jaques name changed over the centuries to become Jackway(s), Jakeway(s) and Jeakway at different times. John Jaques' father was Hugh.

You don't mention anything about his first marriage - Is it the one, according to our transcriptions between a John JEAKWAYS and a Betty EVERIT on the 23rd April 1758 at Holy Trinity Nailsea with witnesses with the surname WEDMORE? The Nailsea transcriptions also show possible baptisms of children of John & Betty and later of a John & Sarah and the burial of a Betty JACKWAYS.
