43 St. Paul’s Road, Weston-super-Mare
published by on Tue, 29/03/2016 - 14:17
I am trying to find some information on someone who I believe may be my Great Grandfather.
His name was Thomas Carter and he lived at No 43 St. Paul’s Road, Weston-super-Mare until he died in March, 1952.
He had been Head Porter at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge until he retired in 1934 when sometime after that date he moved to Western-super-Mare.
He was married to a Martha (Smith) in Cambridge until she passed away in 1927,
so he may have lived out his life in WSM on his own!

There may be someone still around that may have known him, but I think that's very unlikely, but any information would be appreciated!

I've found Thomas Carter at 22 Severn Avenue in 1939, as a widower, and living with Mary A Carter. He is classed as a widower, and she is single

Severn Avenue is just round the corner from St Pauls Road

He is a retired college porter, and she is a boarding house proprietor

Perhaps she is his sister in law.

Wow! That was quick work dedulin!
Did you find this information in census records?
I'm very new to this so do not have a great understanding on how to proceed further with my investigations!
If Mary A Carter were his sister in law, would she have the same sir name as him though? That I find strange!
Needless to say this must be the same Thomas Carter that I'm looking for.
Many, many thanks.

Dear Mr de Dulin,
I would just like to thank you for you help in finding the information
you kindly provided re Thomas Carter and as you may see I have had some
direct contact with Pat Hase on this matter also.
She asked me what my connection to him is and I replied also direct to her explaining the reasons for my interest.
Perhaps she can provide you with my text directly, as opposed to having it posted on this forum for your interest also!
Many thanks again and please do not hesitate to get in touch should you wish to extend this thread.
Best,
Rob

Peter has told you about the 1939 Register entry for Thomas CARTER.  It was his sister he was living with.  He died as you said in 1952 and she died in 1955 - They were both buried in Weston Cemetery but there are no memorials on their graves.  There is a CD available from our Society or through Parish Chest which has recently been upgraded to work now on all PCs and contains information from the Burial Registers and the Memorial Inscriptions for all the 30,000+ burials in this cemetery since 1856.

I'm not sure how much you already know about him but it does seem that his wife Martha CARTER and their married daughter Martha Bessie I'ANSON both died (separately) in 1927 - see FreeBMD.   What is your connection?

You can see 43 St Paul's Road on Google Street View - so at least you can see the type of house he lived in.
