My Somerset Families:- ELMS HUGHES;COOM(B)S;SCOURSE;SHUTT(E)

Hello,

My name is Chris Dye, originally from South Wales but now living in Norfolk. I became interested in my family history in the 70's and have been doing bits off and on ever since. My maiden name was ELMS, and while my father was alive he got that side of the family back to the 1700's to Chew Magna; High Littleton and Clutton. My paternal grandmother's maiden name was HUGHES and I assumed this would lead me into Wales....but no my Hughes family arrived in S. Wales from Camerton and Dunkerton in the early 1800's.

My mother's maternal side are also from Somerset (and Devon).This is the side I am concentrating on at the moment. My Grandmother was a COOMBS ( or COOMS or COOMBES) the family seem to have come from the Weston area. Christopher Charles was baptised November 2nd 1823 Parents Laurence and Ann COOMS but I'm struggling to find their marriage. I think I've found Laurence bap. on May 9th 1782 to Thomas and Sarah COOMS. Christopher married Deborah SCOURSE from Cheddar. Their son Henry James Married Emma SHUTT I have her family back to her grandfather Robert from Trull.

Any information on any of these names gratefully received.

FamilySearch has a marriage of Lawrence COOMBES to Ann WEBBER at St James, Bristol on 26 December 1822.

It was not uncommon for people to go to Bristol to be married and the transcription available from the Bristol & Avon FHS on CD or as a download includes the statement that he was from Weston-super-Mare.

There is a baptism of a Lawrence COMBS on the 27th Jan 1782 at Portbury but if you look at our transcriptions you will see he has different parents from the one you quoted.

Thanks Pat,I've got the information from the internet but it wasn't the full transcription so wasn't sure it was right as Christopher is the first child I can find for the couple and that would make Lawrence 40+. Not impossible but unlikely.

I think I will have to bite the bullet and pay for full membership. Dad was a member of Somerset FHS for many years and did a lot of transcribing for the society, but our family History takes me to many parts of the country and the subscriptions all add up!!

Thanks Dave, I have tried FamilySearch for my Coom(be)s but I found nothing!! I think I must be doing something wrong there but not sure what!!

Hi Chris. I did a "wide" search on FamilySearch. That is I used a 30 year spread for the date of marriage and I specified England as the country, but I did not specify a county or parish. All I can say is that it worked for me.
