Richard Hodges - London House

I have been reading "the Book of Burnham-on-Sea - A record of the Ebb and Flow of a Somerset Town" by Winston and Robert Thomas.
In this book it is mentioned that my 3x great grandfather, Richard Hodges, lived in London House in Berrow Road on the way to Burnham. I would love to know more about this residence.
Can someone please assist me with what the house looked like (eg: what was it made of; how many storeys did it have; etc)?
Is the house still in existence?
It would be very much appreciated if I could obtain a photograph. Does anyone know where one is available from?

I made some enquiries via the North Sedgemoor Local History Group and have had this reply:

"I think the question refers to Wharf Cottage, Berrow Road, Burnham and is mistakenly referred to in the enquiry as "London House". The reference is taken from The Book Of Burnham on page 142 and is definitely Wharf Cottage.

Using ancestry and the various Census records we have
1841 Richard Hodges Grocer in Berrow (village)
1851 Richard Hodges Shop keeper in Berrow (village)
1861 Richard Hodges Coal dealer at Wharf Cottage, Berrow Road, Burnham
1871 Richard Hodges living in Cardiff
1871 Guy Hodges (his son) coal dealer at Wharf Cottage, Berrow Road, Burnham
1881 Guy Hodges as above
1891 Guy Hodges, St Annes (this is the same premises with a different title)
1901 Guy Hodges, Berrow Road (ditto)
1911 Guy Hodges (In Canada ???)

If you look closely at this photograph you just about determine the name "Hodges" on the sign adjoining the road.

A new house now occupies the site, having been built within the last 5 years or so."

I share with Jenny the same interest in Richard Hodges and my comment relates particularly to Richard's wife, born Mary Crandon (Crandon has been a Christian name in my family ever since). Mary died on 7 April
1827.

It would be most helpful if anybody could provide any details of Mary and her family. I note from records on websites that Crandon was a frequently occurring name in the birth and death records in the Burnham/Berrow area but I have not been able to make any specific connection.

Do you know when Mary was born and/or when and where she was married? I have a couple of Mary CRANDONs in my tree who hailed from Bleadon.

Hi Derek

I will tell you what I have BUT, like other subscribers here, I am quite confused with the Crandons. So many Marys and Williams and a bit of inter marriage to confuse even more. Anyway, I have your Mary as the sister of my 3x great grandfather William Crandon b c 1791 South Brent. I think their parents were William Crandon b c1771 and Ann Nancy Bennett b c 1772 . My William (1791) went on to marry another Mary Crandon b c 1795 Burnham who was the daughter of yet another William Crandon whose wife was possibly Ann Sarah Hembury (but I'm still working on that). See what I mean!

I am happy for any other Crandon researchers out there to put me right if I've got this wrong!

Heather, thanks very much for this. Yes, I do see what you mean! Nevertheless, I now have some helpful information - previously all I had was Mary's name.

I was browsing through Bleadon Parish records today and came across many Crandons, so you may find something of use there.
