Elizabeth CATHOLICK Alias HARSEY
published by DebbieD on Sun, 02/02/2014 - 13:44

In 1808 Betty CATHOLICK alias HARSEY gave birth to a daughter Ann, baptised in Badgworth, Somerset two weeks later. Ann CATHOLICK died later the same year.  Notes in the registers say that Ann's mother Betty was a pauper and her alias.  Unfortunately, I only have access to transcriptions at the moment, which vary between HARSEY/HORSEY/HORSLEY.

Elizabeth CATHOLICK married John HAVERFIELD in Badgworth in 1809. They had two daughters that I know of, Ann and Mary.  Elizabeth HAVERFIELD was buried in Badgworth in January 1816 aged 28 giving a date of birth of c1787.

I would really like to find Elizabeth's origins and the reason for the alias.  Any suggestions please?

Have you tried the Overseers' Accounts for Badgworth?  They often hold the key to people who are being supported in some way by the parish.  That will mean a visit to the Somerset Heritage Centre in Taunton!

On the National Burial Index - I noticed a burial of a Peater CATHELICK [sic] on the 14 Feb 1793 at Biddisham and wondered whether you might try that parish as well.

Thanks Pat,

I think this will have to be added to the ever growing pile of things to look into when I eventually get the chance to go to to Taunton :)
