Pym Family of 1800's
published by on Thu, 19/09/2013 - 9:46
My husband's Great Great Grandfather George Pym was born and raised in Brean, Somerset by his parents George 1793-abt1875 and Hannah (born in Bristol 1801). This man married Maria Coombs in Axbridge before emigrating with two children to Australia in 1857 along with a brother John. Five siblings remained in England, two of whom stayed living with their mother Hannah after the passing of their father George. Hannah died in 1882 and there are no further records I can obtain beyond that. Three of the daughters appeared to have married into the families of Miles, Brooks and Tout. I would like to find out about some of the local history of the families in Brean around that time and beyond. The census' available do not specify house numbers but I would be keen to see how many original houses still exist from the early 1800's. I would also like to find out Hannah's maiden name. We live in Australia and have limited access. I have drained my resources from ancestry.com.
Any information appreciated.

Today, some of our members put their heads together trying to help you.  You wrote that George PYM was the son of George & Hannah PYM and you were looking for the maiden name of Hannah.  For about an hour we searched for a marriage of a George PYM with a Hannah without any success until we suddenly realised that George was possibly not the son of George and Hannah PYM but could have been a  son of a Samuel & Hannah PYM

A George PYM was christened in Brean 24th Sept 1835. - He had an elder brother also called George who had died and was buried at Brean.  There were other siblings baptised both before and after George

Using the transcriptions available on this site (for a very modest fee!) you can access these parish registers and also find the marriage of a Samuel PIM (note variant of spelling) to a Hannah BEAKES at Brean on the 2nd April 1821.  Samuel was a widower when he married Hannah and his first marriage was also at Brean.  His first wife was buried at Berrow.

We would be interested to hear what you think about this possibility.

I have a couple of books about Brean  - unfortunately neither has an index but both give some insight into the area. "The Story of Berrow and Brean"by William St J Kemm - I think it was privately published and I can't see a publication date - and "Brean, the Millenium Years" by Joan Jackson published in 1999.

Thank you for your interest and I apologise that I got the name wrong. Samuel's son George called his son Samuel!!!! It can get confusing. I didn't check my generations when I wrote to you. Anyway, the Samuel Pim that you have found is the correct one. The name spelling varies over the next couple generations and in Australia they are now Pym.
I was intrigued to hear that he was a widower before he married Hannah. I will investigate the transcriptions and try to dig deeper. I will also search for the books you have suggested. Thank you.
