Rex asks:
"Has anyone come across Charles Henry Webb POPE (b.1887) after April 1913 when he is described, on my father's birth certificate, as a GWR porter?
I know his father was the William POPE (married to Louisa Jane SAY) who died in 1916. [buried in Weston Cemetery] Though originally a farmer, he had been the postmaster at Uphill Post Office until suspended in 1914 as a result of a telegram betting scam involving, amongst others, Charles Henry's father-in-law Sidney SHIRLEY and William's youngest daughter. Sidney was jailed for six months for his part in it.
I know that two sisters [of Charles] went to Canada and that Charles's widowed mother, remaining sisters, brother and oldest son, also Charles Henry, followed in 1919. They were all established in Toronto by 1921. I also know that his wife, Ethel, had a daughter by an unknown father in June 1916. Ethel, along with the three younger POPE children, moved to Nunhead in South East London in 1917. Ethel died of broncho-pneumonia in 1918".
If any of you know what happened to Charles Henry Webb POPE - Rex would be delighted to hear from you.
